more about the redwoods... http://www.sacredsonoma.com/armstrong.html

Located in the Russian River country about an hour and a half's drive north of San Francisco, this 805-acre park features a magnificent grove of ancient redwoods, a large outdoor amphitheater, self-guided nature trails, and a variety of picnic facilities.

As you stroll through this beautiful old-growth redwood forest, you'll see some of the tallest and oldest trees remaining in this part of California. The Parson Jones Tree is about 310 feet high; the Colonel Armstrong Tree is more than 1,400 years old.

During the 1880's, this area was set aside as a "natural park and botanical garden" by Colonel James Armstrong, an early-day lumber man who recognized the beauty and natural value of the forests he harvested. Today, the ancient redwood forest within the park is the largest remaining old-growth redwood forest in Sonoma County. It is a living reminder of the magnificent primeval redwood forest that covered much of this area before logging operations began during the 19th century.

The cost redwood (sequoia sempervirens) is the world's tallest living thing. (The very tallest redwood is 366 feet high.) They are also one of the world's oldest living things. (Some of them survive for as much as 2,000 years). They grow naturally only in a long, narrow belt along the coast from southern Oregon to central California where moderate climate combines with heavy winter rains and frequent summer fog. Coast redwoods reach their maximum size and height on alluvial flats like the one here beside Fife Creek.

DIRECTIONS: To get to the park, turn west on River Road from highway 101, approximately 2 miles north of Santa Rosa. Drive to Guerneville. At the second traffic signal in Guerneville, turn north (right) on Armstrong Road, which dead-ends in the park.

BODEGA BAY

We highly recommend a trip to Bodega Bay. This sleepy fishing town is just a short day trip from the farm. Or make it even special with an overnight at the Bodega Bay Lodge, visit their spa and dine at the famous Duck Club. This is a trip you will remember. You can start your day with a trip down River Road to the famous Korbel Champagne Cellars, then on to Guerneville and the stellar redwoods at Armstrong Woods, then hook up at Hwy 1 and follow the Russian River to the mouth of the ocean and it's beautiful scenic Hwy 1. Make sure to stop at any of the many beaches along the way and finish off with lunch at The Tides Warf & Restaurant in Bodega Bay. This is where the movie "The Birds" was filmed and is home to the freshest seafood around. On your way home from Bodega Bay you'll wind through Bodega...home to the famous "Birds" house.

SONOMA COAST

Along more than thirty miles of rugged and scenic coastline of the Sonoma coast are numerous parks where the visitor can camp, hike, observe a variety of sea and bird life, and enjoy nature.  The coast features stretches of wide, sandy beaches and sections of rocky cliffs. Visitors are warned of sudden "sneaker waves" when very large waves can sweep up on the beach and carry off the unwary.

Sonoma Coast State Beach. Broad, shining beaches and secluded coves, rugged headlands and natural arches, and a craggy coastline with tidal pools and reefs characterize one of California's most scenic attractions - Sonoma Coast State Beach. The beach, actually a series of beaches separated by rocky bluffs, extends 17 miles from Bodega Head to Myer's Gulch, just south of Fort Ross in Sonoma County. It is accessible to beachcombers, fishermen, sunbathers, and picnickers from more than a dozen points along coast Highway 1. Generally north coast weather is a chilling combination of wind and fog. Fortunately, during summer, the morning fog usually burns off by mid-day, making for pleasant afternoons. However, even during summer, be prepared for wet, cold, and windy north coast weather. This coast is not for swimming, and lifeguard service is not provided. Sleeper waves, backwash, sudden drop-offs, rip currents and the cold water, make even surf play or climbing on nearby rock outcroppings dangerous.

Bodega Head, located within Sonoma Coast State Beach, is an outcropping which juts into the Pacific. California Gray Whales can be observed close to the coast as they migrate South from early December through mid-February, and North from March until early May.

Goat Rock, within Sonoma Coast State Park is located off Highway 1 at the mouth of the Russian River. Dozens of mature harbor seals and seal pups can be observed on the sandy shores of the Russian River where it meets the ocean. Although the seals may appear tame, they frighten easily and, like all wild animals, can inflict serious bites. During the March through June pupping season, people or dogs approaching too closely are serious threats to the pregnant females and newborn pups. Pups are unable to swim, and when left alone on land they are defenseless against predators.
